Contact Lens Exams and Fittings

Contact Lens Exams and Fittings at Eyes & Optics

Contact lenses offer a convenient way to enjoy clear vision without glasses. Whether you're interested in trying contact lenses for the first time, updating your prescription, or finding a more comfortable option, a proper contact lens exam and fitting are essential.

At Eyes & Optics, we provide contact lens exams and fittings for children and adults in Farmington Hills and throughout Metro Detroit. Our doctors take the time to understand your vision needs, evaluate your eye health, and help you find contact lenses that fit comfortably and provide clear vision.

What Happens During a Contact Lens Exam?

A contact lens exam involves more than simply determining your prescription. Because contact lenses sit directly on your eyes, it's important to make sure they fit properly and are safe to wear.
During your examination, our doctors will evaluate your vision, assess the health of your eyes, and discuss your contact lens options.

We'll consider factors such as your prescription, lifestyle, comfort, and how often you plan to wear your lenses. Whether you're interested in daily disposable contacts, reusable lenses such as two week or monthly lenses, or specialty contact lenses, we'll help you understand your options.

If you're over 40 and starting to notice changes in your near vision, we can also discuss multifocal contact lenses and other options that may help reduce your dependence on reading glasses.

The Contact Lens Fitting Process

Once our doctors determine you are a good candidate to wear contact lenses, we will start the fitting process.

Step 1: Selecting Your Contact Lenses

Our doctors will evaluate how the trial contact lenses fit your eyes and assess your vision and comfort. Different lens designs, materials, and prescriptions may be considered to find the best option for your individual needs.

Step 2: Learning to Insert and Remove Your Contacts

If you're new to contact lenses, our staff will teach you how to safely insert and remove them at our office. Once you can insert and remove them comfortably, we will send the trial contact lenses home with you to try for around one to two weeks.

We'll also review proper contact lens hygiene, cleaning, storage, and replacement schedules so you feel confident caring for your lenses at home.

Step 3: Trying Your Contact Lenses at Home

This gives you an opportunity to evaluate how your contacts feel and how well you see during your normal daily activities.

Step 4: Contact Lens Follow-Up

After your trial period, we'll schedule a follow-up visit to evaluate your vision, comfort, and contact lens fit.

If necessary, our doctors may recommend adjustments to your prescription or lens design.
Once your contact lens prescription is finalized, you'll be ready to order your supply of lenses directly at our office.

Types of Contact Lenses We Offer

At Eyes & Optics, we offer a variety of contact lens options to accommodate different prescriptions, lifestyles, and eye conditions.

Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses are a common, popular choice because they are generally comfortable and easy to adapt to.

We offer daily disposable, two week, and monthly replacement contact lenses from leading manufacturers, including CooperVision, Alcon, Johnson & Johnson, Bausch + Lomb, and many more.

Our doctors can help you determine which replacement schedule and lens material best suit your needs.

Gas Permeable Contact Lenses

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses are another option for patients who need precise vision correction or have certain eye conditions.

These specialty lenses may be particularly beneficial for patients with high prescriptions, irregular corneas, or conditions such as keratoconus.

Dr. Roy Wilson is an expert and has more than 30 years of experience fitting gas permeable contact lenses. Our doctors can help determine whether they're an appropriate option for you.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) Contact Lenses

Orthokeratology, commonly called Ortho-K, uses specially designed rigid contact lenses worn overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea.

After removing the lenses in the morning, patients can enjoy clear vision throughout the day without wearing glasses or contact lenses.

Ortho-K can be an option for certain patients with myopia (nearsighted) and astigmatism. It is also used as a myopia management treatment for some children to help slow the progression of myopia.

Ortho-K is a good option for patients of all ages, and our doctors will determine if you are a good candidate.

Multifocal Contact Lenses

As we get older, it becomes more difficult for our eyes to focus on nearby objects. This normal age-related change, called presbyopia, often becomes noticeable after age 40.

Multifocal contact lenses incorporate different prescription powers to help you see at multiple distances, including distance, intermediate (computer), and near.

For many patients, multifocal contacts can reduce the need for reading glasses while providing the convenience of contact lens wear.

Contact Lenses for Children and Teens

Contact lenses aren't just for adults. Many children and teenagers can successfully wear contact lenses when they're ready to take responsibility for proper lens care.
Our doctors consider each child's vision needs, maturity, lifestyle, and ability to handle contact lenses safely.

Dr. Lucas Wilson has no age requirement for contact lenses and fits children of all ages.

For children with progressing nearsightedness, we can also discuss specialized contact lens options designed for myopia management including soft contact lenses and Ortho-K.

Why Regular Contact Lens Exams Matter

Even if your contact lenses feel comfortable and your vision seems clear, regular contact lens exams are important for maintaining healthy eyes.

Your prescription, ocular surface, and eye health can change over time. During your examination, our doctors evaluate your contact lens fit, vision, and overall eye health to help identify potential problems before they become serious issues.

If you're experiencing dryness, irritation, redness, or blurry vision while wearing your contacts, we can help determine whether a different lens material, design, or prescription may improve your comfort.

What to Do If Your Eyes Become Red

If you develop redness, irritation, pain, or unusual discomfort while wearing contact lenses, remove the lenses immediately and do not wear them again until your eyes have been evaluated by our doctors. Redness in contact lens wearers can sometimes indicate a serious eye infection or corneal ulcer, which may threaten your vision if left untreated.

Warning signs that require urgent attention include eye pain, increasing redness, sensitivity to light, blurry or decreased vision, excessive tearing, discharge, or a white spot on the cornea. If you experience any of these symptoms, remove your contact lenses and seek an urgent eye examination the same day. If our office is unavailable, seek emergency eye care. Do not attempt to cover up redness with eye drops or resume wearing contact lenses until our doctors confirm it is safe to do so.
