See the Future Clearly: Myopia Awareness Week 2025

May 19th–25th marks Myopia Awareness Week 2025—a time dedicated to educating families about one of the fastest-growing eye conditions in the world: myopia, or nearsightedness.

At Eyes & Optics we believe early education and intervention can change the course of a child’s vision for life. That’s why we’re proud to raise awareness and empower parents with the facts about myopia.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia is a condition where distant objects appear blurry, while near objects remain clear. It happens when the eye grows too long from front to back, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it.

It’s more than just a need for stronger glasses—it’s a progressive condition that, if left unmanaged, can increase the risk of serious eye health issues later in life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic maculopathy.

Myopia Is on the Rise

Myopia has become increasingly common with half of the world’s population is projected to be myopic by 2050. Kids are also being diagnosed at younger ages than ever before.

Why the rise? Genetics play a role, but modern lifestyles—more screen time, less time outdoors—are accelerating its onset and progression.

What Parents Need to Know

If your child is squinting, sitting too close to screens, struggling to see the board at school, or complaining of headaches or tired eyes, it’s time for an eye exam. The earlier we detect myopia, the more we can do to slow it down.

What We Can Do

At Eyes & Optics we offer evidence-based myopia control options, including:

  • Specialty soft contact lenses designed to slow eye growth

  • Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses worn overnight

  • Atropine eye drops

  • Lifestyle guidance to encourage outdoor time and healthy visual habits

These treatments don’t just correct vision—they help protect long-term eye health.
